Welcome to Silvia Casasola's Home Page

Hi, you are visiting Silvia

I graduated from University of California in Irvine in 2001 in Social Networks. My interests are graph theory, kinship, affiliation networks, linkages and all kinds of networks. I am currently doing research in Mexico where I continue to work the networks of families of colonial Guatemala during the XVIII century.

Concentration of property in few and untried hands, rich convents, taxes, offices by purchase, tithe... centralized government, lack of laws adapted to circumstances, inequality of races, jealousies and hatred of one province for another, isolation, the horrors of the Conquest, decimation of Indians, ferocious intolerance buried the colonies in an immense tomb sprinkled with a few drops of Holy Water.

A. Batres Jauregui, 1920

The 32 families intermarrying in the period from 1630 to 1820 in Guatemala are shown here.

"Familias de la sangre I" , shows 19 prominent families in the XVIII century; the lines represent marriage ties, and "Familias de la sangre II", shows the 15 families that were linked by at least one marriage. Four of the prominent families did not marry their offspring into the close group of 15. As can be seen, the Galvez Corral family had a marriage ocurring among blood relatives. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) gives a visual display that helps to picture the connections among these Spanish families. Various measures of centrality (Freeman, L. 1977, 1979) are proposed to find the families who were important, synonymous of prestige, for the period.

You can read some information in my Spanish page.

You may ask yourself why in Spanish? I have to respond saying that I am from Guatemala. In case you are interested in GUATEMALA, or maybe in social networks in Spanish here are some links to good pages.
